PSYCHIATRIC ADVANCE DIRECTIVES

Psychiatric advance directives are an important, but often under used, tool to ensure a consumer's participation in his or her mental health treatment. Advance directives are based on the principles of personal choice and self-determination.

In order to educate consumers, providers and advocates on the use of advance directives, the Mental Health Association in Texas and the National Mental Health Association hosted a training on advance directives in Austin on July 26, 2002. The tool kit below contains presentations from that training, action planning that training participants created to expand the use of advance directives, and some helpful links to better understand and create an advance directive.
