About

Mental Health America of Texas, is the oldest
citizens' mental health advocacy and education
organization
in Texas.
Founded in 1935 as a non-profit 501(c)3 organization,
Mental Health America of Texas reaches out to
communities across Texas to promote mental health,
prevent mental disorders, and improve the care and
treatment of people with mental illnesses through
education and advocacy.
As the faces and voices of those affected by mental
health and mental illness are clearer and more evident,
it is our vision to develop a society where mental
health is the cornerstone of public health, stigma is
eliminated and all Texans have access to comprehensive,
high quality, culturally competent care.

Mental Health America of Texas provides
leadership to independent, local affiliates across
Texas. Affiliates implement national initiatives on the
local level and develop individual programs geared to
the specific mental health needs of their communities.
Mental Health America of Texas serves as state leader for the
Texas Parents as Teachers program. Texas Parents as
Teachers is an early childhood, parent education and
family support program designed to empower all parents
to give their child the best possible start in life.

Mental Health America of Texas addresses key issues
surrounding mental health and mental illnesses through
collaborations, research, innovative programming,
legislative campaigns and public awareness initiatives.
Many educational materials, websites and exhibits are
bilingual in content and target the needs of
individuals, families, educators and the media.
Initiatives and educational materials encourage early
recognition of mental health disorders, appropriate
treatment, and de-stigmatization of issues in mental
health and mental illness.

The rapidly changing health care environment poses huge
risks to adults and children with mental health
treatment needs. Mental Health America of Texas
is a recognized authority in mental health and mental
illnesses. Through legislative activities, community
forums, public education, media relations and statewide
collaborations the Association works to ensure that
consumers, family members, professionals, business
owners and the media are active and effective advocates
in mental health

Mental Health America of Texas offers most of
its resources and materials at no cost to individuals,
