Mental illness and mental disorders affect just over a quarter of our adult population but they affect men and women differently. Understanding the differences related mental illness, how it manifests, how stigma affects their decision-making to seek treatment and what treatments are most effective is essential to mental illness recovery.

A recent National Institutes of Health survey found that men are more likely to be diagnosed with anti-social and substance abuse disorders than women. Further, suicide is a critical area of concern for men. According to data from the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, while women are three times more likely to attempt suicide than men, men die by suicide at a rate four times higher than women and represent 79.4% of all U.S. Suicides.
